Add a backup authentication method
After you've set up your primary method of two-step authentication, you can set up one or more alternate authentication methods as backup. This is useful when your primary authentication method is unavailable.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, click your username and account picture.
Click Manage account > Security.
In the Two-step authentication section, click Add a backup method
Select one of the following options:
Authenticator app
Security key or Biometrics
Backup phone
Click Next.
Set up the backup two-step authentication according to the method that you selected.
Optional: Set up another backup method using this procedure.
Save your recovery codes in case you lose access to your mobile device. Make sure that you store them in a safe location offline that you can access in multiple ways, such as from your mobile device, your desktop computer, and from a printed document.
The next time you log in to your Shopify admin, you can select which authentication method to use.
Two-step authentication recovery codes
When you set up a two-step authentication method, you have the opportunity to save ten recovery codes and store them in a safe place. Recovery codes enable you to access your Shopify admin if any other authentication method is not available. For example, if you don't have access to your mobile device, then you can use one of your recovery codes to log in to your account if it has two-step authentication enabled.
Make sure that you store your recovery codes in a safe place. You can print, copy, or download the recovery codes. In addition, you can store your recovery codes in a cloud storage location that you can access easily, such as the following:
Dropbox
iCloud
Google Drive
You can use a password manager such as the following:
Lastpass
1Password
Note
Each recovery code can be used only once.
If you use all your recovery codes, you can regenerate a new list of codes.
Retrieve and save your recovery codes
If you didn't save your recovery codes when you set up your authentication method, you can retrieve them at any time. You must be logged in to your Shopify account to retrieve your recovery codes.
Steps:
From your Shopify admin, click your username and account picture.
Click Manage account > Security.
In the Two-step authentication section, under Save your recover codes, click View codes.
Optional: If you've used all ten of your recovery codes previously, then click Generate new codes.
Do any of the following:
To print a PDF or hard copy of the recovery codes, click Print codes.
To copy and paste the recovery codes into an electronic document, click Copy codes.
To download the recovery codes to a txt file on your device, click Download codes.
Store your recovery codes in a safe place.
